Power punch: Goshen Eagles score three in the sixth to edge Purple Cats 10-7

Kate Warrick picked up three RBIs and the Goshen Eagles scored three runs in the sixth inning to defeat Ariton 10-7 Thursday.
“I thought we came out and hit the ball really well,” said Eagles head coach Amy Warrick. “It was just a mental lapse on defense, we seemed to let our guard down in the sixth inning.”
Sydni Garrett picked up the win for the Eagles. The freshman finished off the last 1 2/3 innings while allowing two runs. She relieved Hannah Calhoun who got the start for the Eagles. Calhoun pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs. “I thought Hannah pitched a really good game,” Warrick said. “They saw her two times and they saw her for a third time in this game so I felt like we needed to put Sydni in to see how that would go.”
Tessa Little led the way offensively. The senior picked up three hits during the contest. Kate Warrick also had a big game, picking up two hits and three RBI’s including two on a first inning homerun.
“I was proud of her,” Warrick said. “She has been seeing the ball well this year. She has kind of going down, but she has been working hard on hitting, so I’m proud of Kate.”
Calhoun went 1-4 hitting, but was 3-5 on base. Katlyn Gamble went 1-2 but reached base four times on the night.
The Eagles jumped on the Purple Cats for five total runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate and had three hits and three walks. Calhoun scored on a wild pitch and Kati Thomas grounded out to score Gamble and Allen singled in Carmen Kelly. The big hit came off the bat of Warrick, who hit a two-run homerun to right center.
The Purple Cats battled back in the top of the second inning and scored two runs on a single and two walks.
Both teams locked down in the third inning, before the Eagles added to their lead with a run in the fifth. Gamble led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on single by Kelly.
Little picked up her third hit in the fifth inning and came around to score on a single by Kelly.
The Purple Cats five runs on two hits and two hits in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 7-7.
The Eagles answered quickly in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs in the inning.
The Eagles now will get set for the Elba tournament. Pool play for the Eagles begins at 4 p.m. today when the take on Geneva County.
