To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1986 national championship team, Troy baseball will celebrate 80’s weekend during this weekend’s series against New Orleans.

The series opener is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. today, with game two Saturday at 3 p.m. The series finale will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.

“It’s going to be wonderful for me,” said Trojans head coach Mark Smartt. “I am excited to have a really nice turnout. At last count we were up to 19-20 players, which is the largest turnout that we have had.”

This weekend’s reunion will be the third time in the past 30 years that the team will be honored. The team gathered for the 20th and 25th anniversary as well.

“For me personally, just being around those guys it is going to be awesome,” Smartt said. “We talk quite often and we stay in touch.”

During their run to a national championship, Troy finished the 1986 season with a 46-8 record, which is the least amount of loses in program history. While doing so Troy broke five single season records and finished in the top three in Lowest ERA and most shutouts. The Trojans finished 12-0 in conference and post season play.

“We had good players and we played well,” Smartt said. “The chemistry of that group was very special. Somehow and someway that team had a very close bond with one another. There was a comradely that only comes around very so often.”

The members of the 1986 will be able to show off the comradely in a dinner with current players after Saturday’s game.

“I want each one of them to address the team and share with them what they will experience at Troy,” Smartt said. “So that our guys can hear first hand from someone other than me…I think our players can learn an awful lot from that.”

All weekend long fans will have the opportunity to purchase general admission tickets for $1 and the concession stand will feature prices from the 1980s. The current Trojans will also have an ability to share in the excitement, as each player will have an 80’s song for their walk up music.

The 1986 team will officially be honored before Saturday’s 3 p.m. first pitch and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free 1986 commemorative poster.
