Charles Henderson High School’s Abigail Salmon was the top overall shooter in the 2016 Ozark Regional Archery Tournament on Monday.

Troy City Schools sent 97 archers to Ozark in hopes of qualifying for the state tournament, and all three of Troy’s teams – elementary, middle and high school – walked away with first place honors.

“The scores that we posted were some of the highest scores we have posted in a regional championship in the past few years,” said coach Forrest Lee. “Our goal is to be one of the premiere teams in the state. From top to bottom I think we are.”

All three teams finished in the top ten in the state with two regionals left and Lee is confident that will be enough for an invitation to the state meet.

“We have higher goals than being ninth in the state,” Lee said. “Our goal is to place as high as we can in the state tournament as a team. If that is accomplished than we hope we will have individuals that will be noticed for their scores.”

The fourth and fifth grade team from Troy Elementary finished with a total of 2,854 points, coming in first place. The middle school team finished with 3,133, while the high school team finished at 3,197.

“Our kids are excited,” Lee said. “As a program we have goals we want to reach and we are building towards that. We want to get back on top of the mountain. I am real thrilled with the sportsmanship they exhibited while shooting.”

The top 12 scores from each school counted for the team competition. Four of the top 12 scorers must come from the opposite gender.

On the individual side of the tournament, Salmon stole the show. The senior put up a total of 10,177 points during the tournament.

“She is a multi-sport person,” Lee said. “She practiced one day and shot a 279. It is awarding that you have a person who is diverse and focused on whatever she is doing. She is going to squeeze as much out of her orange and lemon that she can. She is going to complete her day.”

Other individual award winners include:

• Braden Norris, third in elementary boys.

• Lilly Ryan, first, and Tatum Brook, second in elementary girls.

• Caleb Watkins, first; Noah Prestwood, second; and Robert Gramble, third in middle school boys.

• Jaleigh Owens, first; Irene Park, second; Sarah Madison Davis, third in middle school girls.

• Loftin Worthington, first; Tyler Ward, second; and Will Worthington, third in high school boys.

• Salmon, first, and Abbie Barron, second, in high school girls.

The Troy archers now will wait until Monday when they will find out if they will be heading to Montgomery for the state competition on April 7.
