The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans head to the sub-regionals for the third consecutive year, and they are ready.
“We are all really excited, from the coaches to the fans to all the supporters and all the girls,” said head coach Dyneshia Jones. “It all boils down to working hard. The steps we wanted to take are the ones we are taking right now.”
The Trojans come into Saturday’s showdown with Vigor undefeated against teams from Class 5A, but the Wolves will be a new opponent.
“I don’t know too much about them,” Jones said. “I know they made it this far so I know they are pretty good. It’s going to come down to the basic fundamentals like making free throws and boxing out. Every team is going to have talent right now. There are 16 teams left in 5A and all of them are going to have good guards and post players.”
Vigor comes into the regional tournament as the winner of Class 5A Area 2 while posting over 20 wins this season.
“It’s hard,” Jones said. “All the teams are different. They are a good team. If we play our game and do what we are supposed to do, then it will be difficult for other teams to stop us.”
Right now Jones believes her players are playing their best basketball of the season.
“As a coach you’re not going to be 100 percent satisfied,” Jones said. “They are young and there will always be room for mistakes, but I am impressed with the age and the talent they have.”
Jones has pushed the Trojans to play up all season, and the team’s only two losses were to 7A schools “It was great practice,” she said. “That is why we played them. It prepared them for the regional tournament.”
The Trojans’ versatility and key players –Moari Davenport, India Blakely and Tatyana Siler – will prove critical in the next round of playoffs.
“We are versatile,” Jones said. “Anyone on the team either in the starting lineup or on the bench on any given night can be the leading scorer.”
Tip off between the Trojans and the Wolves will be Saturday in Dothan at the Dothan Civic Center.
