The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans contained Abbeville’s top two point guards and secured a 62-45 win over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones knew going that the key to stopping the Yellow Jackets was to stop their two athletic guards.

“The key was trying to stop their two guards,” Jones said. “One of them got away from us scoring wise in the first quarter, but we changed up the defense and we were able to contain both of them.”

With those scorers contained, the Trojans were able to focus on the inside game.

“The key was to stop them,” Jones said. “I knew that they didn’t have any post players so the key was to play a zone defense but at the same time stop the guards and play man-to-man.”

Maori Davenport and Tatyana Siler proved key players for the Trojans. Davenport finished with 16 points on the night and also accumulated six blocks. Niaira Jones led the Trojans with 22 on the points while India Blakely finished with 16.

“They dominated,” Jones said. “(Davenport) did really good at getting offensive rebounds. She did a really good job.”

As post-season play begins next week, the competition will increase. Jones said she hopes Saturday’s effort gave her team momentum.

“I just take it one game at a time,” Jones said. “Different teams have different matchups and key players. We just have to take it one game at a time.”

The Trojans will close out the regular season Tuesday evening when they travel to take on Jeff Davis at 5:30 p.m.

“We are going to have to watch all five of their players,” Jones said. “We are going to have to play good.
