The Pike County Lady Eagles dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing Thursday to G.W. Long 41-23 in the Goshen High School Christmas tournament.

“Baby steps, baby steps,” said Lady Eagle’s head coach Toddy Reynolds. “The hardest thing for us right now is being able to reach our upper classmen.”

The Lady Eagles struggled offensively in their loss Tuesday night against Bullock County. Those struggled continued Thursday.

“We are trying to work on our motion offense right now,” Reynolds said. “We are just not confident enough right now to use it. We have to stick with our primary offense right now, and that is leading to our struggles. We have such a young team. You have to be really careful on how you attack that.

The Bulldogs young core continues to struggle to score the basketball, but coach Reynolds believes it’s just a matter of time before it all clicks.

“It’s just going to take some consistency and trust within the system,” Reynolds said.

The Eagles scored just six points in the first period and another six in the second. After a 10-2 G.W. Long run, the Bulldogs entered half time trailing 25-12.

The Bulldogs let opposing players get behind them for early scores, something the coach said contributed to the loss.

“You are supposed to have person responsible for that,” Reynolds said.

“She is an eighth-grader for us. When they have those mental breakdowns, you can see it.”

The Lady Bulldogs scored just four points in the third quarter and entered the fourth trailing 35-16. Although they outscored the Rebels 7-6 in the final period, it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.

“There is a hard lesson to be learned,” Reynolds said. “Some of them may have their minutes dropped until they learn to do what I want them to do.”

The Bulldogs play Luverne at 3:30 p.m. today.
