Lady Rebels off to a good start in 2015

The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels have started the 2015-16 season with a 1-3 record and head coach Courtney Davidson says she has plenty of reasons to be proud.

After struggling last year, the Rebels defeated rival Opp at the beginning of this season.

“We started the season 1-3 which is an improvement on where we started last year,” Davidson said. “Last year we had no seniors or juniors. We were very young. This year we have returned almost everybody, but we are still a young team.”

The Rebels rely on outside shots and they are working to develop their inside game.

“We have a lot of shooters on the outside,” Davidson said. “We don’t have a lot of size. We only have to big players down low on the whole team. We are very small, quick and very much a team that shoots the ball from the outside.”

The experience they do have on the team is starting to click.

“We are not focusing on the big picture or the four quarters of a game,” Davidson said, adding that the focus is “let’s win this quarter. We are setting goals for scoring a certain amount of points in a quarter and making sure not to let up a certain amount of points. We are attacking the game in pieces and not necessarily as a whole.”

The biggest obstacle so far is the inability to develop offensively. Junior Leah Ash is Zion Chapel’s leading scorer as a shooting guard and she is someone that keeps the offense moving. When playing Opp, she came out and scored nine points in the first three minutes.

“Defensively, we usually play well, but our ability to see the floor is still developing,” Davidson said. “Some players can see the floor better than others. It’s really just understanding and knowing what we have to accomplish.”

The Rebels will be back in action this evening when they travel to play Houston Academy at 5:30 p.m.
