The Pike Liberal Arts school junior varsity football team improved their record to 2-0 on Tuesday evening after defeating Glenwood 39-0.

After just two weeks of play, Patriot head coach Wes Allen sees bright things in the future for the young Patriots.

“The kids did a really good job at blocking at the point of attack,” Allen said. “We were able to get the ball carrier into the second level several times. It really set the tone, and I was pleased about how physical the players were up front. Glenwood played very hard and they are a hardnosed team.”

After defeating Lee Scott a week ago, the Patriots are riding high with a record of 2-0 – a record that Allen believes the play of his team validates the team’s record.

“They are playing really hard. We try to teach them some fundamentals like running the football and stopping the run,” Allen said. “We always try to get to the football and be fundamentally sound. The kids are playing really hard and I think that is the most positive thing.”

Although the Patriots have played well in the opening two weeks of the season, there will be no taking it easy at practice or in the film room. Allen will keep pushing the importance of playing fundamentally sound football.

“We try and see certain things we need to work on when we look at film. There are things we can always get better at,” Allen said. “We really focus on blocking at the line of scrimmage and doing all of the little things. The little things make big things happen.”

With it being so early in the season and because most of the players play on both sides of the ball, it is hard for Allen to pinpoint his team’s identity. He hopes that it is one that shows hard work on every snap and players who never take a play off.

“I don’t know if we are there yet,” Allen said. “We are still trying to get there and are better in certain areas fundamentally. The team has come together and played really well as a team.”

The Patriots will use this week’s practices to prepare for next Tuesday’s road match up in Greenville against Fort Dale.
