Charles Henderson High School head baseball coach Gregory Mullins resigned Wednesday and William Teal was named interim head coach of the Trojans.
Mullins was hired in July to replace long-time coach Derek Irons, who left to take a head coaching position at Oak Mountain High School. Mullins came from Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga., where he has been head coach since 2009 and, in 2014-2015, director of athletics. While there, he was named SSAC Coach of the Year and BPC coach of the year, and his teams were nationally ranked in the NAIA. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1995-1999.
Superintendent Dr. Lee Hicks said Teal was named interim head coach for the 2015-2016 year.
“We just met with the team and told them,” Hicks said Wednesday afternoon. “We know he’s going to do a wonderful job. We’re happy about it … he’s a hometown boy and he brings a lot of energy and experience to the program.”
“He’s got a chance now to lead his alma mater and to step into a head coaching job with a championship program,” Hicks said.
Teal graduated from Charles Henderson in 2008 and played at Troy University from 2011-2013.
“He’s got a chance now to lead his alma mater and to step into a head coaching job with a championship program,” Hicks said.
Teal is more than excited to be able to have the opportunity to lead his former team in 2016.
“It’s very exciting, I am really at a loss for words,” Teal said. “I can’t wait to take over and I am pumped up about it. I have known a lot of these kids for a long time. I am expecting to be able to do some good things this year as far as wins and losses. I also want to concentrate on the seniors coming through. My job is to get them to walk across the stage at the end of the year, which is the most important thing. This is definitely an exciting time for me and my wife.”
