The Charles Henderson quarterback and receiver camp is in full swing this week at the Troy Sportsplex.

Charles Henderson coach Brad McCoy is teaming up with former Troy State University football standout Frank Sadler to provide local quarterbacks in the Pike County area an opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade to becoming a successful quarterback.

“I have coached for 48 years, I noticed there isn’t anything like this for the kids in town. There is nothing like this,” Sadler said. “If we are to develop quarterbacks, we need to have these types of camps started.”

The camp is giving kids the ability to work on their footwork as well as the throwing motions in an effort to teach the young kids the skills needed to be a successful quarterback.

“The sooner you start the camps and the sooner you have the repetitions the better they get,” Sadler said. “Therefore they will be able to go try out for their school’s team and battle for the opportunity to show their skills. The main thing I am trying to do is encourage them to join a camp in the summer months before football practice. You need to attend camps to learn the game.”

Sadler believes that among the things needed to succeed at the quarterback position is being able to practice the correct way, something that will be instilled into these players’ minds over the next two weeks.

“To gain skills you have to practice those skills, and they will get better through repetition” Sadler said.

The camp, which targets players ages 10-18, offers a variety of drills. Even the younger kids have the opportunity to spend a couple weeks out of the summer to practice the sport they love.

“I think it’s a big deal that Coach Sadler is out here being able to lead things,” said parent Randy Bruner. “Coach Sadler has had a very good college coaching career. He started practicing with my son (Carson Bruner) last year and spending a lot of time with him. It’s good to be in a city with this opportunity.”

The first week of the camp will feature just quarterbacks with Coach Sadler along with members of the Charles Henderson football staff. Starting on June 8th wide receivers will be able to enter the camp with the quarterbacks and be able to work on 7-on-7 drills.

The camp is still open for new participants for $10 per week. The camp runs Monday thru Friday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
