Midweek “3 things”
Published 11:41 am Thursday, March 8, 2012
I did a “3 things” list last week and liked it so here’s another one. Baseball bounced back to defeat East Carolina and softball is set to take on LSU this weekend. The football team also has its Trojan Olympics starting today (4p.m.) and Pro Day on Friday.
3 THINGS
1. Cass Abercrombie stepped up and turned in a fantastic performance on Wednesday night. His final line: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Here is the game story.
One things Cass mentioned after the game was that he buried his curveball low and away. He said before he was trying to nip the corner of the zone but trusting his catcher to block the low breaking stuff was a big factor. Abercrombie set a career high in innings pitched and strikeouts.
2. Troy’s softball team is off to a great 16-2 start and face LSU and Mississippi Valley State twice this weekend. If Troy leaves Baton Rouge 4-0 or 3-1, I think we might be witnessing a special season beginning to unfold. There will be a preview in Friday’s edition of The Messenger.
One Sun Belt team that will stand in Troy’s way is Louisiana-Layfayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 19-0 and ranked 11th in the county in the USA Today/NFSA coaches poll. Troy hosts ULL on March 24-25.
3. The football team kicks off its Trojan Olympics today. The event is held inside Sartain Hall (see they’re already finding a use for the old girl). It begins at 4p.m. at is open to the public.
From Troy University: “Phase one events consist of a bench press competition, 3-point shooting contest, slam dunk contest and touchdown celebration dance contest. The final event is a spinoff on Dancing with the Stars as each team has been paired with a Troy cheerleader and must do a one-minute dance.”
Should be fun. I will have an article in Friday’s edition of The Messenger.
