Heart walk gets new venue

The Pike County Heart Walk board has its “sites” set on a different location this year and teams are “suiting up” for the annual event which will be Feb. 19 at the Troy Recreation Center.

Elizabeth Mitchell, Pike County Heart Walk chair, said that the change in venue to the Troy Recreation Center was made in an effort to make the Heart Walk more of a “walking” event.

“Cattleman Park is a great place and we’ve enjoyed having the Heart Walk there,” Mitchell said. “But, we thought that the walking track at the recreation center would be an ideal place for the teams to walk for prizes while enjoying the entertainment that will be going on in the gym below.”

Mitchell said an outstanding lineup of entertainment is being scheduled that includes the Troy University Dancers.

“The Troy University football team and cheerleaders will also be here,” Mitchell said. “We’ll have the children’s corner with lots of fun activities planned. As always, booths will be set up with heart-health information. Tables will be set up for the teams so they can enjoy all of the fun of the night together.”

The 2013 Pike County Heart Walk will be from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. and teams will be encouraged to walk for prizes and donations during that time.

The laps walked will be logged and several team prizes will be awarded including the big prize for the most laps walked.

“The competition will make the walk even more interesting and fun for the teams,” Mitchell said.

The Heart Walk teams are the heart of the annual fundraiser. The funds raised support American Heart Association research that advances the cause of reducing/eliminating deaths and disabilities due to heart attack and strokes.

Teams are being formed for the 2013 Pike County Heart Walk and include neighborhoods, families, friends, churches, businesses, schools, clubs and organizations.

“The board only asks that there are at least four members to a team,” Mitchell said. “There is no minimum amount to be raised. We appreciate every dime and every dollar that is raised.

“Our 2013 Heart Walk is going to be a lot of fun as we join together in the fight against heart disease and stroke.”
