It’s been a two-year project, but the Pike County Commission is getting ready to kick it in higher gear.

In their meeting Monday, commissioners passed a resolution to apply for additional grants to resurface a portion of Henderson Highway.

County Administrator Harry Sanders said the commission was awarded a grant two years ago to begin the project, but it only covered about half the costs.

Now, since there is a large amount of industrial travel, the commission is seeking more funds to complete the project.

“The K&W Plastics had an extensive expansion,” Sanders said. “The resurfacing needs to be done to that road in order to support that industry and all those out there.”

The total project will cost somewhere around $600,000, and it will resurface from U.S. Highway 231 to the railroad.

They haven’t placed a timeframe on the resurfacing plans, but once they have adequate funding, roadwork is expected to begin.

Also Monday, the commission approved to hire June Freeman as a customer service representative for the Probate office.

This will leave two more vacancies in that office.

The commission recognized the cheerleaders, football players and water girls of Pike Liberal Arts School for their state championship win by presenting them with certificates.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 12.
