Kylie Morrissy decided Senior Night was as good a time as any to score a career high Saturday night. Morrissy lit the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers up for 31 points, as the Trojans won 60-57 in Troy.

With her parents in the stands, Morrissy nailed two free throws with 12 seconds left in the game to give Troy (12-13, 7-8 Sun Belt) the 60-57 advantage.

“The only thing going through my head was I had to make them because I turned the ball over,” Morrissy said.

Morrissy said this was a great win against a great team for the Trojans. She said she knew it would be a tight game in the end.

“I knew they would come back on us, but I knew we could hold it out for the win,” she said.

Troy head coach Michael Murphy said Morrissy’s effort Saturday was phenomenal.

“I told her when she turned the ball over I was ready to strangle her and then when she went to the free throw line I was ready to kiss her, so she knew she had to make up for her mistake,” he said. “But Kylie is capable of making big plays in big situations and she did just that.”

With Troy clinging to a 57-54 lead with 28 seconds left, Amy McNear snatched the ball away from Morrissy and Hope Brown converted a three-point play to tie the game. Troy held a 10-point lead with three minutes remaining, but WKU (14-10, 8-6) fought back for the tie.

After trailing 27-26 at halftime, the Trojans slowly built a lead throughout the opening part of the second half and led by as many as 12 points before the Hilltoppers struck back.

Murphy said Morrissy has been a great asset to the Troy team her entire career.

“Her numbers reflect a great career, not a good career,” Murphy said. “She will go down as one of the best that played for four years in this league. Not NAIA and not the Atlantic Sun, but she played four years in the Sun Belt, which is a top-tier conference.”

The win was a crucial victory for the Trojans, as it allows them the possibility for the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament if they go 3-0 to end the season.

It was also a big win over a top Sun Belt team and Murphy said he was happy to get the victory.

“This was obviously a big win for our program,” he said. “This was in many ways what you could call a signature win because it comes against a team that for a long time has been the class of this league along with Middle Tennessee. Western Kentucky is a team that has gone to two Final Fours and has WNBA had players all up and down their roster in previous years. And I am so proud of our kids for the win.”

Troy heads to Florida International University Wednesday. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. from Miami, Fla.
