The No. 1 Pike Liberal Arts Patriots suffered their first loss of the season Thursday in their opening game of the Edgewood Academy Tournament in Elmore, 8-2 to rival Lee-Scott.

The Warriors scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Pike scored one in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Alex Adams that scored Will Starling.

The Patriots (8-1) tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning, as Trey Walters singled to open the inning, Logan Stewart singled, Ross Hixon reached on a bunt single and Starling was hit by a pitch to bring in Walters.

Lee-Scott tacked on three runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth inning for the 8-2 final.

Stewart finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and Corey Goodson and Justin McLaughlin each had one hit.

Bradley Floyd took the loss on the mound, going four-plus innings and allowing five runs on five hits, striking out four batters and walking one.

Stewart pitched one inning, allowing three runs on two hits and walking two. Hixon struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit in one inning of work.

The Patriots faced Macon-East in game two Thursday and they led 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth at press time. This game was counted as a region game for both teams.

Pike opened the scoring in the first inning with four runs. Hixon doubled to open the game, Starling walked and Adams singled Hixon home. Sam Carroll also got a single to score Starling and Stewart plated Adams and Carroll with a single.

Macon-East scored one run in the second inning, but Pike added one run in each of the next three innings.

In the third inning Starling started things off with a single, Adams doubled and Carroll hit a sacrifice fly to score Starling and give Pike a 5-1 lead.

Goodson led off the fourth inning with walk and scored on a Starling single. In the fifth inning Adams was hit by a pitch and scored on a double play ball.

Starling started the game and had allowed one run on five hits through four innings.

He had seven strikeouts with two walks and one hit batter. The final score will be in Sunday’s Messenger.
