Preschoolers celebrate Community Helpers Day

Ask most any little boys, from toddlers to four-year-olds, what they want to be when they grow up and their answers will be a fireman or a policeman, and around these parts, a farmer.
Ask little girls of the same age and their answers will usually be a nurse or teacher and, of course, a princess.
On Wednesday, the children at First United Methodist Church of Troy Day Care were introduced to the community helpers that provide protection and necessary services for them, their families and their community.
Community Helpers Day is a special day each year for the children enrolled in the church’s Day Care Center.
The purpose of Community Helpers Day is to give the children an opportunity to interact with their community helpers and learn more about what they do in a hands-on kind of way.
Teresa Rodgers, Day Care Center director, said Community Helpers Day is a special day within Community Helpers Week.
“On Community Helpers Day, the children dress up as their favorite community helper,” Rodgers said. “Today, we had a lot of policemen, firemen, doctors and nurses because, they, along with teachers and postmen, are heroes to children. They understand these community helpers will help them and take care of them. Children look up to these community helpers and aspire to be like them.”
Rodgers said Community Helpers Day is an opportunity to meet the community helpers up close so they won’t be afraid of a uniform or the blast of a siren.
“We want them to trust the uniform and to know that a siren means help is coming,” she said.
Rodgers said goal of Community Helpers Day is for the children to gain an appreciation for all community helpers and know they can be trusted to take care of them.
“And, we want to instill in our children the desire to have a servant’s heart,” she said.
Community Helpers Day began with a prayer by Pastor Dusty Taylor asking for the safety for all community helpers and giving thanks for their dedication to helping others.
The First United Methodist Church Day Care expressed appreciation to all the community helpers who made the Community Helpers Day such an exciting fun/learning day for the children.
