The city of Troy is still seeking a new home for its library, and it could be close to finding it.

Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford said while nothing is official, the city has sought appraisals of a property located on College Street.

“We’ve given appraisals to property owners and are waiting to hear from them,” Lunsford said.

But, this does not necessarily mean all other options the city has been considering are gone.

“This was just out there, and we were investigating,” Lunsford said. “Depending on the response (from land owners), I will meet with the city council and decide where the best location for the library would be.”

The city still has ownership of the old Elm Street School land, and that remains a possible new home for the library, Lunsford said.

Lunsford said he could not say which property the city has shown interest in, since no deal has been made. But, the area located downtown would be an asset to the Troy community, he said.

“The downtown area would certainly benefit from having it in that area,” Lunsford said.

The need for a new library is something the city has discussed for about two years, and until this year, it was something they were financially prepared to take on.

“We’re still in a situation where we’re waiting to see some improvements on the bond market. The economy has impacted that decision, but it certainly has not quelled our desire to have a new library.”

Even though the project may have to be put on hold, Lunsford said the council has tackled this problem with other projects, as well.

“It took 10 years before we could afford to issue bonds and make payments and make it happen without increasing taxes,” Lunsford said. “We’ve always been able to hold off until the budget would grow enough to be able to make improvements to the city.”
