Brundidge Mayor Isabell Boyd signed the necessary documents Tuesday to transfer the deed for 28 acres on South Main Street from the City of Brundidge to the Pike County Board of Education.

The deed had previously been transferred from the Brundidge Industrial Development Board to the City of Brundidge, in order to pave the way for the deed transfer to the Pike County BOE.

Boyd said the transfer of the deed was to make it possible for the Pike County BOE to construct an athletic complex across Main Street from the Pike County High School campus.

“When this athletic complex is completed, it will expand the existing athletic facilities and provide opportunities for future projects,” Boyd said. “The City of Brundidge is proud to transfer the deed to this property to the Pike County Schools in support of Pike County High School and Pike County Elementary that are both located within our city.”

Pike County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bazzell expressed appreciation for the support of the City of Brundidge and for the city’s making the property available to the Pike County BOE.

“The plans for the 28 acres are that the Pike County Board of Education will eventually construct an athletic complex on the site,” Bazzell said. “Plans are to build a baseball and softball facility with playing and practice fields. We would also like to add a soccer field, a regulation track and tennis courts. However, we don’t have a target date for any of the construction. Our priority is to get our projects at Banks going. That is next in our capital plans. We are excited about both our plans in Brundidge and in Banks.”

Bazzell said the projected $6.7 million Banks project will include new buildings on the middle school campus that will include an administration suite and science labs. The second phase of the Banks project will be the relocation of the Banks Primary School to the Banks School campus. There, grades kindergarten through three will probably have 12 classrooms and a larger library and media center.
