‘Great Bowls of Fire’ Chili Cook-off is Saturday at Pioneer Museum

It may be hot in Mexico but it’s chili here!

And, even if it rains, hails, sleets or snows on Saturday, the “Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook-Off” will still go on, said Keith Roling, a member of the Troy Rotary Club, event co-sponsor with the Pioneer Museum of Alabama.

“The Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook-Off is a fundraiser for the Pioneer Museum of Alabama and the funds raised will be dedicated to the construction of an ‘outhouse’ at the museum,” Roling said. “The idea for the outhouse-style ADA restroom is that it will be in keeping with the historic period of the museum.”

Roling said a restroom that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act is greatly needed at the museum.

The chili cook-off will feature some of the best chili created by some of the best cook teams in the county, Roling said.

As of Thursday, eight teams had tossed their chef hats into the kitchen and, if the teams live up to their names, the Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook-Off will live up to its name.

The Backfire Chili Company of Kenny Campbell, Stephanie Baker and Newton Campbell and the Angry Elf Chili Company of Angie Horn Stainaker, Michael Bunn, Luke Bunn and Jonathon Bunn guarantee a hot time at Pioneer Museum of Alabama Saturday.

The Making Chili Great Again team of Scott Saunders, Billy Jefcoat and Frank Scarbrough will not waiver if the competition gets too hot.

CE&F Chili Company has a secret ingredient that neither Charles Windham, Emory Ellis, Forrest Lee nor Earl Ellis will reveal.  But it will set their pot apart, guaranteed.

Jason Browder and Logan East said their “Better than Wendy’s” chili is better and that’s “no brag,  just fact.”

When friends David Price, Ed Hedden and Benny Pinckard are stirring the pot, their competition breaks out in fearful sweat.

And, the name, Southern Grill and Patio, gives notice that Jennifer Cartier and Bill Cartier know their business and the competition better take notice.

Lana Hartley of Town and Country Flooring is relying on her own chili-making experience to come out a winner. And, her experience should be good enough to take home the prize.

Roling said the Rotary Club/ Pioneer Museum of Alabama chili cook-off will be the biggest and best in Pike County and there are two opportunities for bragging rights. Judges will determine a winner and another winner will be selected by popular vote at $1 each.

The cook off will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama. Entertainment will be by Moe Odom and his band. Chili will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 for two.

However, the best buy is an annual family membership that will include Ole Time Christmas in December.

The ticket is admission to the museum, chili and bottled water. Soft beverages and hotdogs will be available for an additional fee.
