The City of Brundidge will host Cultural Arts Week November 3-9 with a variety of arts and entertainment events throughout the week.

Dr. Toni Wilson, co-chair of the city’s Revitalization Committee and organizer of  Cultural Arts Week, said although the weeklong event officially kicks off on Sunday, November 3, there will be a flurry of activity this weekend as art work by local artists will be displayed in stores throughout the down town area.

“The store windows will display art of different mediums and will set the stage for several downtown activities during the week,” Wilson said. “Cultural Arts Week will get underway officially at 5 p.m. on Sunday with “Choirs on Parade” at the Cultural Arts Building on the campus of Pike County High School. On Monday, the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library will be the site for the painting class for those who have pre-registered.

“On Tuesday, we will a storyteller at Pike County Elementary School and also at Banks,” Wilson said. “At 6 p.m. one of the storyteller members of the National Association of Black Storyteller will perform at the PCHS Cultural Arts Building. We had hoped that Mama Linda, a founder of NABS, would be here but, due to illness, she will not be able to attend.”

On Wednesday, there will be a block party on the grounds of the historic Bass House in downtown Brundidge featuring Olaf Lieb’s band from 4 until 7 p.m.

“School Days” will be on Thursday featuring the PCHS Marching Band on the Bass House grounds,” Wilson said. “Several Troy University fraternities will do step presentations at the city’s library at 6 p.m. The fraternities will include Sigma Gamma Rho, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Gamma Rho.

The Troy University Theater and Dance will present the history of dance at the PCHS Cultural Arts Building on Friday. Cultural Arts Week in Brundidge will conclude on Saturday, November 9, with “Poetry and Paint” at 6 p.m. at the PCHS Cultural Arts Building

“Poetry will be performed and the painters will express their interpretations of the poetry through art,” Wilson said. “We are looking forward to a week of cultural arts activities and invite everyone to join us for this celebration of the arts.”

Cultural Arts Week in Brundidge is supported by a matching $4,600 matching grant awarded to the City of Brundidge by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

Brundidge Mayor Isabell Boyd expressed appreciation to ASCA for the grant award and to Wilson and the City Revitalization Committee for putting together the weeklong cultural event that includes, art, music and dance.
