The 28^th Annual Peanut Butter Festival in Brundidge will be held, according to tradition, on the last Saturday in October. The festival features, a 5-K Peanut Butter Run, live entertainment, old-time demonstrations, games, contests, food and frolic and the Nutter Butter Parade which is a signature event of the Peanut Butter Festival. The afternoon parade features nuts of all and every kind and a few stiff necks.

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to entries. The only requirement is that the entry is sure to bring a smile to even the grumpiest of faces.

The annual harvest and heritage celebration is a throwback to the mule and wagon days when farmers and their families went into town after the crops were gathered to enjoy the fellowship of friends and neighbors and to buy a few things with their cash crop money. It was a fun and festive time and that’s the kind of time the sponsoring Brundidge Historical Society hopes to re-create at the annual Peanut Butter Festival and the Nutter Butter Parade that gets underway at 1 p.m. and follows a Main Street route.

There might be floats, pickup trucks, wagons and boats, tom-walkers and handkerchief wavers, politicians and regular people.

This year, Alabama’s Bicentennial year, all Pike County and surrounding communities are invited and encouraged to have an entry that relates, in some way, to their character or their historical significance such as Miss Josie Moonshine, Saco’s Timber Queen or Hamilton Cross Roads’ Miss E-Z Mo.

There will be several queens including Miss Goober Cocktail and Miss Sweet Tater. Of course, there will be four-legged entries and maybe some creepy crawlers. You just never know what might come parading down the street.

The parade committee would appreciate those who plan to participate calling 334-735-2200 or 670-6302. However, those who wake up and decide to put on their bathrobes and slippers and go on parade are just as welcome. Just find a place at the end of the parade line and hop in – but before the horses, for good reason.

Lineup is at 12:15 p.m. just above the Brundidge Piggly Wiggly along Veterans Blvd. Find a nesting place until the parade steps off at 12:40 to be downtown by 1 p.m. Walking entries may enter at the new location of Brundidge City Hall.
