The Brundidge City Council voted Tuesday night to apply for a $400,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund Program grant to purchase and install playground equipment at Galloway and Ramage parks.  The funds could also be used to construct concession facilities and restrooms.

Ashton Hutchison, community and economic development director for South Center Alabama Development Commission, said the grant is a 50/50 matching grant and the city’s match would be $200,000.

Theresa Trawick, Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library director, and Molly Casey, library board chair, presented a proposal for plans to host Imagi-Con in the city on Saturday, February 27, 2021.

Trawick said a similar event was held recently in Dothan and was very successful.

The Imagi-Con would be much like a block party and be held at different venues throughout the city, Trawick said. “This idea for the Imagi-Con has been suggested by young people in our community and they are excited about the possibility. This will be a family-friendly benefit.”

Trawick said the Imagi-con is an innovative idea for a small town.

Ideas that are being considered for the Imagi-Con include Cosplay, which is the act of dressing up as a character from a movie, book or video game.

“We are also considering table-top gaming such as Dungeons & Dragons, You-Gi-Oh, Magic and Harry Potter,” Trawick said. “An Artist and Author Alley, martial arts and wrestling, Henna tattoos, panels, food demonstration and, for children, a magician, face painting and balloon art are also in the plans.

The Imagi-Con would also include vendors with costumes, food, trinkets, movies, documentaries and Fanatics, music and more.

Trawick said to be successful, the Imagi-Con would require the support of the council and the community and asked for the council’s support.

“The young people are pushing this old lady with this,” Trawick said with a smile. “But I always try to bend with the wind. We can’t get away from change and change can be good. Imagi-Con will be take a lot of planning and a lot of work but I think it will be good for Brundidge and I would rather try and fail than not try at all,” she said.

Mayor Isabell Boyd expressed her support of the project proposed by the staff of the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library.

Boyd proclaimed the week of November 3, 2019 through November 9, 2019 Cultural Arts Week in Brundidge.

“During that week, the city will celebrate the importance of cultural arts as an essential element of community with events dedicated to promoting and showcasing the various cultural arts sectors,” Boyd said. “Our cultural arts sector not only provides direct and indirect benefits to the city, but also plays a decisive and critical role in community development, our quality of life and the understanding of our way of life.”

Boyd said Brundidge is fortunate to have a diverse and variety of businesses, educators and artists dedicated to a variety of arts that educate, encourage and advance the arts in Brundidge.

Upcoming events in Brundidge include the Pike County Homecoming parade at 2 p.m.  Friday and the Homecoming game with Opp at 7 p.m. The citywide Trick or Treat for children will be on the grounds of the historic Bass House at 5 p.m. on Halloween.

The Brundidge City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
