The Johnson Center for the Arts will present “Challenge 14,” a five-state juried art show, with the exhibition dates November 13, 2019, through January 4, 2020.

Wiley White, JCA exhibition coordinator, said the juried art show is so titled because the artwork entered should measure no more than 14 inches by 14 inches x 14 inches.

“And, that’s a challenge,” White said.

“Challenge 14” is for ages 18 and over. Artists from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida are invited to enter. The deadline to enter is before midnight, Monday, September 2, 2019.

Awards totaling $3,500 will include Best of Show, $1,000; Board of Directors Award, $500; and eight individual awards of $250 each.

The entry fees are $35 for one work, $45 for two works and $55 for three works.

“No art entered should measure more than 14 inches by 14 inches x 14 inches and that includes the frame of 2-D work and any base that is attached to 3-D work,” White said. “The maximum weight for work entered in ‘Challenge 14’ is 50 pounds.”

White said all artwork must be the original work of the person submitting it and it must be priced for sale. A commission will be retained by the JCA.

“The work must have been completed during 2017, 2018 or 2019.” she said. “Artists may not substitute for accepted artworks. An entry that the JCA considers offensive or that does not meet exhibition criteria will not be accepted. Images of the art for the show may be used for promotional purposes by the JCA.”

White said the juror for the exhibition will select art from digital images and will select award winners by viewing the actual art at the Johnson Center for the Arts.

“E. Bruce Phillips, Jr. will be the juror for ‘Challenge 14,’” White said. “He is associate professor of art at Tuskegee University. He received a master’s degree in fine art and painting from Savannah College of Art and Design and has studied in Italy and France. He has a bachelor of arts degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta.”

White said Philips has held several positions in the arts and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and had solo exhibitions in Birmingham.
