A 12-year old boy was seriously burned in a house fire on the corner of Caldwell and Bowden streets in Brundidge Wednesday morning. He was transported by helicopter to Troy Regional Medical Center and then to the burn center at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, said his grandmother Joanne Sanders, who lives next door.

“My grandson was not in school (Wednesday) because he had fever,” Sanders said. “My daughter called and asked me to keep a check on him. I’m not sure what time it was but I heard him screaming ‘Help me, Mimi! Help me! I’m on fire!”

Sanders said she rushed to the door and realized immediately that her grandson was seriously burned on his feet and lower legs.

“I saw the house was on fire and called 911, and just tried to see about him,” Sanders said. “He told me that he waked up  and his room was filled with smoke. He jumped up and ran to get out of the house. His feet caught on fire so he dropped and rolled but the smoke was so thick that he couldn’t find his way out. But Browser, his dog, led him. Together, they got out. I’m so thankful.”

The youngster remained with his grandmother until emergency personnel arrived and he was airlifted to TRMC.

Brundidge Fire Chief Glen Adkins said the fire call came in at 8:21 a.m. When the firefighters arrived, smoke was coming from the backside of the house and flames were visible.

Adkins said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined but it appeared that the  house was a total loss.

Volunteer Fire Departments from Brundidge, Hamilton Crossroads and Springhill at the Troy Fire Department responded to the fire. Adkins expressed appreciation for the assistance.
