Registration for the Troy Public Library’s 2019 Summer Library Program is underway and ages four through 18 are eligible to participate,” said Teresa Colvin, children and young adult director.

“The 2019 Summer Readying will truly be a blast as the TPL presents ‘A Universe of Stories,’” Colvin said. “So, I encourage children and young adults to come by the library and signup for their age group programs and activities and also for the Top Readers program.”

Colvin said the Troy Public Library hopes to inspire kids to read during the summer.

“Educational studies prove that summer reading is necessary to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from spring to fall,” Colvin said. “And to top it off, reading is fun! And the great news is that, with our new library and great collections, we should have books flying off the shelves in record numbers this summer.”
The Summer Library Program will feature Storytime for four- and five-year olds from 2 until 3 p.m. on Mondays that will include aliens, astronaut training, star gazing and shooting for the moon.

“Space, the Final Frontier,” for ages 6-11, will begin on June 11 with balloon themed characters and lots of audience participation. From 2 until 3 p.m. on the following Thursdays, participants will attend “Space Academy” where they will scale the wall, slide over rocks, learn about the stars in a planetarium, experience Animal Tales and enjoy Movie Day.

The young adults will have a “Minute to Win It!” on June 13 with a space edition of the challenge. The always popular “Murder Mystery” will be on June 20.

“There will be a murder at KomixFest and our young adult readers will be invited to attend as their favorite cosplay character,” Colvin said. “On June 27, there will be an ‘Attack of the Locks’ in the Star Wars Escape Room. On July 11, we’ll have a Laser Tag Tournament. Star Wars Movie Day will be July 18 and July 25 will be Game Day and video games will be the order of the day.”
Prizes for the TPL Top Readers program will be awarded according to the total number of age appropriate books read. First, second and third prizes will be awarded to four- and five-year-olds. First and second place prizes will be awarded to six- through 11-year-olds.

Reading logs are due by 5:30 p.m. July 16.

“A special outing will be announced for our top readers,” Colvin said. “We are looking forward to a summer of fun at the Troy Public Library. We invited our young readers to visit the library to learn more about the 2019 Summer Library Program and all it has to offer. And, then sign up to be a part of the summer fun.”
