Those who beat a path to the Goshen High School Ag Academy Plant Sale early Monday morning probably thought someone was playing an April Fool joke on them. “Such beautiful plants at such an affordable price? Who could believe?”

Cody Eiland, academy instructor, said buyers came early and came ready to buy.

“The Boston and Macho ferns are always popular and the tomato plants were going fast,” he said. “All of the plants are healthy and everybody seemed pleased with the quality of the plants and the selections we have.”

And, for no extra charge, the Ag Academy students were ready with information about the care of the plants.

The Macho ferns like shaded areas. Boston ferns like shaded areas, too, but also need a couple of hours of indirect sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon.

The baskets of the Wandering Jew plant, rival the ferns that Mary Elizabeth Griffette, FFA reporter, said have turned one of the Ag Academy’s three greenhouses into a “lush jungle.” The hanging baskets cover the ceiling with a blanket of green, heart-shaped leaves with purple stripes and a silvery sheen to them.

The Wandering Jew needs to be misted and pinched. Mist frequently and pinch off the vining tendrils.

The keepers of the plants said the Wandering Jew plant is so called because of its tendency to escape into shady, wet regions, making it ideal for naturally shady places and covered areas.

Genelynn Lee, FFA president, said plants available for sale include coleus, geraniums, lantana, petunias, wax begonias, snapdragons and succulents.

The prices vary from plant to plant. The Boston ferns and Wandering Jew plants are $10 and the Macho ferns are $20. Most other plants are $3 to $5 with the exception of the succulents that are $2.

Vegetable plants include tomatoes, red cherry tomatoes and okra sell by the six-pack beginning at $2.50.

The plant sale will continue through the week, beginning around 8:30 a.m. and closing around 4 p.m. The plant sale benefits the Agriscience Academy at GHS.
