The Brundidge City Council  held a public hearing Tuesday night. to discuss the city’s Community Development Block Grant  (CDBG) Project serving Southern Classic Food Group and Magnolia Vegetable Processors.

Ashton Hutchinson, grant coordinator, said the City of Brundidge received funds from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) CDBG-Economic Development program  to make water, sewer and road improvements to serve Southern Classic Food Group and Magnolia Vegetable Processors.

Hutchinson said, as a result of the infrastructure improvements, the companies agreed to create new jobs benefiting predominately low and moderate income persons. The project is complete, Hutchinson said, and prepared for closeout.

The project engineer was Polyengineering now, POLY-Dothan. The project administrator was South Central Alabama Development Commission (SCADC).

The prime contractor for the project was SA Graham Company, Brundidge. The CDBG funds spent were $212,114.66. Local funds spent totaled $139,052.84. The project will allow for the creation of 73 full-time jobs

Hutchinson said the project has been completed and the packet is prepared and ready to sign by April 1.

Britt Thomas said the closing out of the project will make the city eligible for the upcoming cycle of CBDG grants. Thomas the public hearing was mandatory but the council was not required to take any action.

Mayor Isabell Boyd said the city does not want to stand still and will make application for future grants.

Boyd said Willie Wright, city recreation director, said the focus now is for kids to sign up for spring sports, including baseball and softball. Hopes are that parents will take advantage of the opportunities for their children to play these summer sports.

The council appointed Council Member Byron Gaynor, District 4, as the voting delegate at the Alabama League of Municipalities annual meeting in Mobile May 4-6. Gaynor will be the voting delegate for the AMIC and ALM business meetings. Council Member Margaret Ross, District 3, will be the alternate voting delegate.

The Brundidge City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Brundidge City Hall. The meetings are open to the public.
