Police have identified a man shot and killed in Troy Saturday in what police believe to be a hunting accident.

Troy Police Chief Randall Barr said Benjamin Preston Brown, 61, of Louisville, was found shot and unresponsive at the scene on County Road 7741.

“Brown had been shot one time in the chest with a high-powered rifle,” Barr said. “The investigation revealed that the two men were hunting together when one mistakenly identified the other as a deer. Neither of the hunters were wearing hunter orange when this incident occurred.”

The Troy Fire Department and Haynes Ambulance also responded to the scene. Efforts to revive Mr. Brown were unsuccessful.

Barr said police have been working to notify the next of kin this week before releasing the man’s identity.

This case remains under investigation by the Troy Police Department, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pike County District Attorney’s Office and the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

Once the investigation is complete it will be turned over to the Pike County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury.
