The City of Troy’s Veterans Weekend Celebration begins on Friday with a Veterans Breakfast at the Colley Senior Complex and concludes with American Legion Post 70’s annual Veterans Day program at Bicentennial Park on Monday.

In the time between, Reunion Troy will host several events celebrating Alabama’s Bicentennial and honoring local veterans of modern wars.

Catherine Jordan, Colley Senior Complex director, said this year’s Veteran’s Breakfast will be the 19th year the seniors have honored local veterans and their spouses. The breakfast begins at 8 a.m. with registration around 7:30 a.m.

“Our Veterans Day Breakfast is something our seniors look forward to each year,” Jordan said. “We consider it an honor and it is certainly the least we can do for those who have done so much, have sacrificed so much for us.”

Jordan said the annual Veterans Day Breakfast has actually outgrown the senior facility.

“We have moved the breakfast to Troy Recreation Park on Enzor Road,” Jordan said. “The breakfast is an opportunity for our veterans to get together with friends and reminisce about old times.”

The guest speaker for the Veterans Breakfast will be Dr. Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Christopher Shannon who has served 28 years in the United States Air Force. His service in the Air Force took him to various countries, which broadened his exposure to a variety of cultural settings. He is currently an assistant professor of Leadership and Ethics at the Air University, Command and Staff College eSchool.

Entertainment for the Veterans Breakfast will be Shelia Jackson, Willie B. Williams, Jr. and Michael O’Hara. The Colors will be presented by the Charles Henderson High School JROTC.

Following the Veterans Breakfast, there will be two presentations at the Troy Public Library sponsored by Reunion Troy. “Voices of Our Veterans” is a documentary featuring local veterans.

“I have seen the documentary and was overjoyed,” Jordan said. “I laughed and I cried. I left with a deep sense of pride in our country and an even greater appreciation for the men and women that serve.”

Also at the library, John D. Morrison, author of “Fire For Effect,” will share the story of the WWII 933rd Field Artillery Battalion, which was made up of men and women from several counties in Southeast Alabama, including Pike.

The documentary and the book presentation will be at 10:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Other Reunion Troy events will be Saturday on the square in downtown Troy. Army Command Sergeant Major Sheer Qualls will be the featured speaker at 10 a.m. followed by a Living Wax Museum featuring local students at 10:30 a.m.

The Veterans History Trial will include the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, the Conecuh River Depot Museum and the vintage planes display at Troy Airport.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, American Legion Post 70 will host the annual Veterans Day Program at Bicentennial Park.
