Campaign finance reports for August show that Democratic candidate Joel Lee Williams has ramped up spending while Republican candidate Wes Allen continues to build up contributions.

Williams and Allen are competing for the District 89 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives, which is being vacated by long-term Rep. Alan Boothe.

The representative in the seat represents all of Pike County as well as a portion of Dale County.

Uncontested in the primary, Williams, a local attorney, did not begin raising money until April other than a contribution from himself to pay for his qualification fee.

By the end of July, Williams had a balance of $19,000. He spent money in July for the first time since qualifying, spending $1,995.

In August, Williams spent three times as much money, a total of $6,087.33. His expenses were $500 to Jesse McDaniel, $75 to the Goshen High School Sports Boosters Club, $55 to the Troy Shrine Club, $2,988.53 to Vinyl Tech Signs, $120 to Charles Henderson Football Boosters, $273.80 to Sticky Frog Signs, $1,675 to U.S. Imprints and $400 to 590Films.

He raised an additional $2,825 in cash contributions. His contributions were $25 from Curtis Kennington, $1,000 from Clarence Brantley, $150 from Joanna Taylor, $100 from Teresa Doty, $1,000 from P. & S. Local Union 52, Industry Promotion Fund, $150 from Clint Warren, $150 from Jennifer Marsden, $100 from Elaine Bassett and $150 from Theron Montgomery. He also received an in-kind contribution of $113.10 from the Alabama Democratic Victory Fund.

Allen, probate judge, began raising money long before he could even officially qualify as he squared off against Republican challenger Marcus Paramore, Troy Council president.

Allen defeated Paramore in the June 5 primary with over $15,000 still left in his balance to use in the race against Williams.

By the end of July, Allen was down to $9,550.

In August, Allen built back up on that number as he prepares for the final months ahead of the November 6 election.

Allen raised $3,950 in cash contributions in August. He received contributions of $500 from ALA-CRNA PAC, $25 from Jesse and April Wilson, $100 from ARH Enterprises, $2,500 from Friends of Retirees, $100 from Randy or Gail Hale, $500 from Troy Small Motors, $100 from David and Susan Johnson, $100 from Terry Jinright, and $25 from Gene Schroeder.

Allen spent $93.05 with Subway Restaurant and $1,780 with Troy Publications for a total expenditure of $1,873.05 for the month. His balance is now $11,627.07

The election will be held Tuesday, November 6. Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Photo identification is required.
