The Troy Music Study Club met Monday night, March 28 in the Johnson Center for the Arts with the Special Events Committee; Dovie Cutchen, Lyndia Dew, Joyce Dix and Melanie Hawkins serving as hosts. The program, Troy University Clarinet Choir, was coordinated by Amanda Ford.

Lyra Crapps, president, welcomed members and guests and led the Federation Collect. The singing of the Federation Hymn and the monthly song were led by Bill Denison and accompanied by Dovie Cutchen at the piano. Joyce Dix presented the background of March’s song,  WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING:  Words by C.Olcott/ G.Graff Jr.; Music: Ernest R. Ball. Music in Poetry chairman, June Kendrick read the poem “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats. during the business session reports were given by officers and committee chairmen.

Amanda Ford introduced the Troy University Clarinet Choir. The Clarinet Ensemble opened the program with “ Concerto for Clarinet” by Artie Shaw(1900-2004), Megan Roberts, soloist. Next a smaller group composed of Don Leonard, Marissa Stanfill, Millie Sullivan and Kirby Pitchford played “Divertimento” 111 Allegro con brio” by Alfred Uhl (1909-1992). “Outta My Way” by Eric Mandat (b.1957) was played by Jennifer Tin berg, Clarinet and Benjamin Fraley, percussion.  Marissa Stanfill and Megan Roberts played “Serenade” 1V Tango, V Tarantella by Michael Kibbs (b.1945).  The next selection, “Tico, Tico” by Zequinha de Abrew (1880-1935) was played by Marissa Stanfill, Megan Roberts, Kelsey Miller, Kirby Pitchford, clarinets and Kaylah Watkins, bass clarinet. The whole clarinet choir joined in playing “Puttin on the Ritz” by Irving Berlin (1888-1989). The closing choir selection “Fantasia” by Alexis Ciesla (b.1967) featured clarinet soloist Jennifer Tinberg.

The University Clarinet Choir is directed by Dr. Tim Phillips. Tonight’s program was directed by Mark Walker, Troy University Director of Bands.

Following the program, refreshments were served to members and guests by the Special Events Committee.
