The Pike County Board of Education’s regular meeting Monday night opened with a discussion of the Aviation Academy.

Superintendent Mark Bazzell said that schools in Hawaii have taken notice of the program and are contacting the board about the program.

“They like the program and they want to start a similar program,” Bazell said. “They are looking to do one in a public school and one in a private school.”

Bazell said that he was impressed that news of the program had reached out that far to people who may have an interest in the program.

The board approved the employment of Jon Sonmar as CTE business education teacher at Pike County High School.

The board also selected Wyman Botts as the AASB 2015 Delegate.

In new business, the board approved:

• Financial statement and bank reconcilements for the month of September 2015

• Payment of payrolls for the month of September 2015 and account run dates of Sept. 23, Sept. 30 and Oct. 6.

• Permission for Seth Wilcox and George Stringer to attend the 2015 Alabama SkillsUSA Local Officers Training Conference in Orange Beach Oct. 22-24.

• Permission for Wanda Corley to attend the Alabama Association of Elementary School Administrator’s Conference in Orange Beach Nov. 1-4.

• Permission for Sylvia Haslam to attend the Alabama Association of Elementary School Administrator’s conference in Orange Beach Nov. 1-4.

• Permission for Shoranda Hunter to attend the 2015 AEA Minority Leadership Conference in Orange Beach Nov. 6-8.

• Permission for Stacy Freeman to attend the AASBO Local School Bookkeeper Professional Development Program in Tuscaloosa Nov. 2-3.

• Permission for Brooke Terry to attend the Child Nutrition Director’s Fall Conference in Pelham Oct. 21-23.

• Permission for Hannah Clifford to attend the College-Ready Writers Program Fall Partnership Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. Nov. 18-21 in order to honor the board’s agreement with the National Writing Project.

• Permission for a bus and bus driver to take the Day Habilitation program to the Peanut Festival in Dothan Nov. 10.

• Permission for a bus and bus driver for the Junior Ambassador trip Oct. 18.

• Student transfers

In personnel, the board approved:

• Catastrophic leave for Joyce Osunde.

• Catastrophic leave for Mary Bradshaw.

• Permission to pay Erikka Knight $600 for coaching the Goshen High School Majorettes. The payment will be made from the GHS Band account.

• Superintendent’s recommendations concerning discipline of several board employees.

The board ended and entered into an executive session.

The next meeting for the Pike County Board of Education is scheduled for Nov. 16. at 5:30 p.m.
