Spanns attend AFMC convention in Huntsville

Alabama Federation of Music Clubs held its Ninety-ninth Annual Convention hosted by Huntsville Music Study Club in Redstone Hilton Gardens Inn, Huntsville ,Alabama April 17-18, 2015. Delegates from Troy Music Study Club were Jerry and Betty Spann who are both Life Members of the Alabama Federation Of Music Clubs. Mrs. Spann is Historian/Reporter of the Troy Club.

Marsha Harrow, President of AFMC 2013-15 presided at the general sessions. The convention opened with Processional of the Officers, Presentation of the Colors, Pledge and the National Anthem , followed by the Federation Collect and Federation Hymn. The convention agenda included reports from AFMC Officers, Division Chairmen , AFMC Officers who also serve the National Federation in an official capacity and the Alabama local club presidents. Betty Spann gave Troy Music Study Club President Lyndia Dew’s report.

Convention attendees were treated to beautiful music performed by first place winners from the AFMC junior and student/collegiate scholarship auditions. The recital at Huntsville First Baptist Church Chapel which followed the Friday night banquet featured Olivia Brown-flute, Jacksonville State University; Adam Cobb-organ, Sanford University; Anna Lee- Junior female voice, Bob Jones High School; Matthew Madonia-violin, University of Alabama; Katherine Vest-piano, Sanford University; Katherine Loudermilk-organ, Sanford University; Aleksandra Kasman-piano, University of Alabama in Birmingham.

A Memorial Service led by Bill Peoples, Chaplain, was held Saturday morning. Club Presidents or a representative placed a white rose in a vase in memory of each deceased club member this year. Two roses were placed by Betty Spann in memory of Troy’s Club members Barbara (Bobbie) Burns Swisher and E. Donald Crapps long time members of Troy Music Study Club.

AFMC Musical Interlude Saturday morning featured Huntsville Music Study Club Chorus and AFMC Female Voice Student/Collegiate audition winner of the Melodia Music Club Award, Joylynn Rushing.

Jan Hill, National Federation of Music Club Board of Directors, from Birmingham installed the following new officers for AFMC in 2015-2017: President-Barbara Lee, President Elect-Carol Larkins, First Vice President- Gayle Baker, Second Vice President-John Larkins, Third Vice President- (Not filled), Fourth Vice President-Renee Richardson, Recording Secretary-Mattlyn Harlee, Corresponding Secretary-Margie Garrett, Treasurer-(Not filled), Historian- Tiger Baker, Chaplain-Bill Peoples.

At the closing luncheon session AFMC Citation Chairman, Gayle Baker presented the club citations, awarding each club a certificate recognizing its various activities during the year. Troy’s Certificate seal had two ribbons and a list of twenty-four activities for which the club was recognized. Troy’s Club also received a Certificate from NFMC for Arts Advocacy. Betty Spann of Troy gave the Courtesy Resolutions. The Schumann Club of Mobile issued an invitation to meet in Mobile May of 2016 for the 100th AFMC Convention. 2015 Convention closed with the singing of the Benediction, ” Gift of Song” by Lana M. Bailey.
