Kappa Delta hosting Shamrock Run

Community members are having a chance to support local children through Kappa Delta Spring Shamrock this March.

Shamrock is an annual philanthropic event where a majority of the funds raised will stay in Pike County to benefit the Child Advocacy Center. Moreover, twenty percent of the donation will benefit the national organization Prevent Child Abuse America.

This year Shamrock is composed of a regular 5K, a one-mile fun run and the Color Me 5K, in which sorority members throwing color powder at participants at checkpoints throughout the run,.

According to Morgan Stokes, Kappa Delta Vice President of Community Service, the Color Me 5K has a symbolic meaning toward the event’s cause.

“We organized the (Color Me 5K) because the money that we raise help brighten the lives of the children in need,” Stokes said.

The event has attracted large response from the community in the past years.

“Our main goal is to reach out to Pike County and the Montgomery, Dothan areas,” said Ivy Watts, a Kappa Delta member.

“It is very rewarding to know a lot of out effort paid off. It was great to see the reaction of the people in the center when we presented the check to them.”

Stokes said the 2014 Shamrock raise approximately $26,000 and this amount is the organization’s goal for this year. She said she is positive that the donations will reach the goal.

“So far this year we have had 12 business donors, including KW Plastics and Continental Cinema,” Stokes said. “I am really encouraged by how much the community has put forth efforts to participate in and sponsored the run for the children.”

The runs will be on March 21, with the starting point on Sorority Hill. The route would be throughout Troy Campus and the Color Me run will have, Stokes said.

Check in will at 7:45 a.m., and the runs will start at 8 a.m.

The event is open to students and the general public. Entry to any run is $25 per person, including a T- shirt for online registration prior to March 5.

Anyone who is interested in participating in the run after March 5 can still sign up. However, the event T-shirt will not be guaranteed.

To appear on a T-Shirt, a business must donate a minimum of $150 and sponsoring the finish line is a minimum of $50.
