A mechanical mishap left a farmer with 25 flaming hay bales on Thursday afternoon.

Henderson Volunteer Fire Department was called to reports of a hay baler on fire at a field on County Road 2262. The fire in the machine quickly spread to the field.

According to Henderson VFD’s Mark Paul, more than 25 hay bales ignited as the blaze spread.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the areas surrounding the bales and to stop the fire from spreading to an uncut section of the field. The bales were left to burn out on their own.

Louie Courson, the owner of the land, said he heard a pop and saw flames while he was operating the machine. He continued to drive in circles to keep the flames from spreading to his tractor. The bale in the machine came out and began to spread the fire to other bales.

Courson believes a broken bearing is to blame for the blaze.

Springhill and Goshen Volunteer Fire Departments, in addition to CARE Ambulance and the Pike County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
