Troy picked up its second win of the season Tuesday night at Trojan Arena with a 77-62 win over the Nicholls Colonels.

The Trojans were led on offense by Jeff Mullahey who finished the night with career high 19 points and 4 rebounds. Tevin Calhoun added 12 points and J.C. Bonny scored 11.

Troy head coach Phil Cunningham said his players did a good job executing the gameplan of driving to the hole and drawing fouls.

“North Texas had them (Nicholls) in the bonus five minutes in to the game,” Cunningham said. “Our plan was to drive the ball because they play a really aggressive style of defense. They are aggressive on ball screens, so our plan was to attack and get to the foul line.”

The Trojans led 40-31 at half, despite attempting only 19 shots from the floor. In the first stanza, the Trojans went 18-for-21 from the free throw line. Late in the first half, Troy went over three minutes without a made shot from the field, but solid work at the charity stripe kept them out front.

Mullahey didn’t attempt a shot from the field in the first half, but hit all six of his free throw attempts. In the second half, Mullahey went 4-for-9 from the floor, including two three pointers.

Mullahey was a little taken back with his career night.

“It surprised me a little tonight as well,” Mullahey said. “I got a couple of open threes, and made a bunch of free throws. With these new rules they call more fouls, so I got a couple of touch fouls. I think one of them was in the back court, but I will take it.”

Troy moves to 2-2 on the season, and are perfect at home under first-year head coach Phil Cunningham. The Trojans travel to Central Arkansas Nov. 26.

Cunningham said the win over the Colonels is a big one for the program.

“Coach (Marcus) Grant and I have been together for a long time at Mississippi State , and have seen Nichols State several times in the past,” Cunningham said. “Our players may not understand and the fans may not understand it, but that was a really good win. Even if it wasn’t a pretty win.”
