Ask Kari Barley, Pioneer Museum of Alabama director, which Pioneer Days events will take center stage this weekend and she’ll stammer.

Push her into a corner and she still won’t give an exact answer.

And, for good reason.

Pioneer Days on Friday and Saturday will feature a lineup of events that are equally outstanding. It would be difficult to pick one over the other.

“We are excited about all of the events that we have scheduled,” Barley said. “Bruce Brennen’s Wild West Show will be back by popular demand along with Davy Crockett portrayed by

Al Bouler, who is a re-enactor at Old Alabama Town in Montgomery.”

Barley said that visitors to Pioneer Days have expressed how much they enjoy the re-enactors. So, this year’s event will feature a variety of re-enactors.

Mike McCreedy will portray Lachlan McGillivray, a prosperous fur trader who operated a fur trading post in Central Alabama.

“We’ll have Civil War re-enactors that include Cherokee soldiers,” Barley said. “Also, we’ll have a pioneer woman who practiced midwifery and a preacher in the log church. Adults and children enjoy visiting with the re-enactors and learning from them.”

Storyteller Ann Dalton will entertain people of all ages with stories from the past.

Pioneer Days will highlight old-time crafts including basket making, blacksmithing, woodcarving, corn shuck doll making, chair caning, coopering, smocking, quilting, sewing, spinning and weaving.

Activities will be on going in all the cabins and the storekeeper will be in Adams Store and checkers will be set up on the porch.

“Also, on the grounds, we’ll have the smokehouse going, wagon rides and antique dealers. And, feeding the chickens is allowed,” Barley said. “On Saturday, the SheBANG! Cloggers and the Benton Brothers will entertain.

And, if that’s not enough, Pioneer Days will close on Saturday with a barn dance in the depot.”

Pioneer Days will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The barn dance will begin at 7 p.m.

Admission to Pioneer Days is $6. Children five and under are admitted free.

Barn dance admission is also $6 or $3 with a ticket to Pioneer Days.
