Jean Stephens
1925 – 2013

Jean Stephens of Opelika was born on January 15, 1925 in Brundidge, Alabama and she passed away on September 18, 2013.

Ms. Stephens passed away at Bethany House. She was the controller at Flowers Baking Company for many years until her retirement. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Opelika Pilot Club serving as president twice and Alabama District Governor.  Ms. Stephens served for many years on the board of directors of the Achievement Center Easter Seals. She also served on the state board of directors for the Easter Seals. She served on the board of directors for Main Street and S.C.O.R.E (Service Core of Retired Executives).

She was one of the original members of the Northside Opelika Neighborhood Association and was instrumental in establishing the Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour. She was happiest spending time with her family and friends at Lake Martin.

Ms. Stephens was preceded in death by her father Noah W. Stephens, mother Lola Griffin Stephens, and sister Mary Louise Stephens Varner. She is survived by a sister Mrs. Charles R Brown, Sr. of Opelika, nephews and nieces that she lovingly raised, Fred (Toni) Varner of Opelika, niece Jena Varner Dickson (Bill) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Tom (Jonie) Varner of Waukesha, Wisconsin. “Grandchildren”, Mary Varner, Emma, Allie, and Will Dickson. Nephews, Charlie (Rowan) Brown and Bill (Becky) Brown; grand nieces and nephews Charles Brown III and Katherine, and Anna and Hank Brown.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church , Brundidge United Methodist Church, Brundidge, Alabama or a charity of your choice.

Funeral will held on Friday September 20, 2013 at 11 am at Trinity United Methodist Church in the sanctuary with Reverend Earl Ballard officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall at Trinity United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Brundidge, Alabama.
