Brundidge Mayor Jimmy Ramage proclaimed the week of April 12-18 the Week of the Young Child in Brundidge.

Ramage and City Councilmember Cynthia Pearson visited the Head Start Center in Brundidge on Friday and presented the proclamation to Head Start Director Tracey Upshaw and the 40 youngsters who are enrolled in the program and their teachers.

“Brundidge Head Start is working to improve early learning opportunities, which are crucial to the growth and development of young children,” Ramage said. “Head Start is also working to build better futures for everyone in Brundidge.”

Ramage said teachers and all others who make in a difference in the lives of young children and their families in Brundidge and all across the country deserve thanks and recognition, especially during the week honoring the young child.

“In recognizing and supporting the people, programs and policies that are committed to high-quality early childhood education, the Brundidge City Council encourages all citizens to work to make a strong investment in our children,” Ramage said.

Upshaw said the Week of the Young Child is an opportunity to celebrate and support children of all ages.

“As our young children learn and grow, the entire community is strengthened,” she said. “We are so appreciative of living in a community that nurtures its children through Head Start and other programs and activities for children.”

The Brundidge Head Start program is accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year. Children between the ages of three and five are eligible. For information or to apply, call 334-735-5496 or 566-1712.
