“I don’t know of any group that’s been more deserving,” said Troy Councilman Johnny Witherington, noting the hard work and dedication of the department during a ribbon cutting and open house Tuesday morning.

The department’s new facility is larger than 1,500 square feet and houses about 50 employees. There is a staff shower, laundry facilities, a large bay where trucks can be serviced and even a ventilated paint room to tackle painting trucks on premises.

“This day has been a long time coming,” said Mayor Jason A. Reeves. “And we are happy it’s here.”

Reeves spoke to those gathered about the dedication of Public Works Director Vaughn Daniels and his unending efforts to see the new facility come to fruition.

Reeves asked all Public Works employees to stand as he said, “These good people work hard every day for the citizens of Troy…Y’all do the hardest job sometimes for the city and sometimes it’s a thankless job, but we are here today to say, ‘Thank you.’”

Councilman Charlie “Sarge” Dunn seconded that notion.

“It’s just a wonderful job that you all do and we can’t thank you enough,” Dunn said.

Daniels shared his excitement with the crowd, thanking Reeves, former mayor Jimmy Lunsford, the city council members, Goodwyn Mills and Cawood and Whaley Construction.

“Oh, what a great day for the city of Troy and the Public Works Department,” Daniels said. “It’s been six years, but we now have a facility that was long-needed.”

“I’m excited. Y’all probably can’t tell it,” Daniels laughed. “But I am excited.”
