The Independence Day celebration in Troy isn’t over, yet.

The city’s fireworks display is scheduled for tonight after being postponed due to weather on July 4.

“The technician and his company gave me a recommendation about noon [July 4] that we should postpone the show, not only because of the weather that we anticipated, but also because of the weather we already had,” said Dan Smith, director of Troy Parks and Recreation. “I definitely wanted to follow their advice because that’s their job and their field of expertise.”

Another consideration in postponing the show was the possibility of lightning. Because the technician uses an electronic system to set off the fireworks, there was a chance lightning could cause the shells to fire.

“We want it to be the excellent show that it always is, but also be safe,” Smith said. “We are looking forward to Saturday evening and crossing our fingers.”

The show will begin between 8:30 and 9 p.m. and plenty of public viewing seats are available at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The fireworks are launched from Charles Henderson High School and can be seen from many spots around Troy.

Smith said the fireworks company used by Troy Parks and Recreation and the City of Troy relayed that many cities postponed their July 4 shows until Labor Day, but local organizers planned for the show to go on this weekend.

“We are really hoping for clear skies on Saturday night and that the fireworks cap off a great Independence Day holiday,” Smith said.
