The clients at the Troy Nutrition Center paused Friday to remember one of their own.

Following a short memorial program, the clients joined the family of Elizabeth Law in releasing balloons in her memory.

Law died on March 4, 2013, at the age of 93. She had been a patron of the Troy Nutrition Center for more than 15 years.

Lynn Newman said her mother was born in South Carolina and met her husband there.

“My dad, Riley Law from Banks, was in the Army when they met,” Newman said. “They married and moved to Pike County and mother was very happy here. It was her home.”

Elizabeth Law worked for the shirt factory on South Brundidge Street for 32 years. She enjoyed her work just as she enjoyed life.

“Mother just loved being around people,” Newman said. “She found a second home and an extended family here at the nutrition center.”

Newman, laughingly, said that her mother was a picky eater and didn’t always eat everything on her plate. However, she was never quite ready to put the dominoes or Rook cards away.

“Miss Elizabeth loved to have a good time and she like to laugh,” said Hassie Green, center director. “She loved to tell jokes and she would tell the same jokes over and over but each time she told them, they had a different ending. And it was funny too.”

Newman said the Troy Nutrition Center was her mother’s “life.”

“I would come to pick her up and she would go to every table and speak to every person before she left,” Newman said. “The Troy Nutrition Center was her life so rather than flowers at her funeral, we request that donations be made to the nutrition center,” Newman said.

Green said that Law had often said it would be nice to have a bench at the former Center location.

“We thought that Miss Elizabeth would like for us to have benches here at our new location,” Green said. “She only got to come and enjoy our new facility two days but she made a lasting impression on all of us. We miss her every day.”

The benches were dedicated in honor of Elizabeth Law.
