Troy Library hosts summer full of reading activities

The Troy Public Library will be holding its Summer Reading Program all throughout summer in hopes of teaching children what fun can be had from incorporating reading along with their other summer activities.

Children’s librarian and coordinator of the reading program, Teresa Colvin, said the summer schedule began as a way to keep children interested in reading so they don’t lose valuable comprehensive reading skills while school is out of session.

And Colvin said she’s excited about all the reading adventures planned for this year’s program.

There will be story time for four to five-year-olds beginning on June 10 and ending on July 8. Themes such as “Dog’s Galore” and “Dinosaur Discovery” will be explored through reading and accompanying activities.

Programs for older children will begin on June 11 with a visit form Dr. Magical Balloons. His act includes balloon artistry of animals of all different shapes and sizes. The library will even host a Pirate Scavenger Hunt on July 19 outside the library with fun wet and wild activities to take part in.

To keep children motivated, a “Top Readers Prize” will be given at a celebration on July 16 honoring readers from ages four to 11.

“We’ve had lots of participation already and most of our slots are already filled,” said Colvin.

Children and parents interested in the Summer Reading Program can register, in person, at the Troy Public Library located at 500 East Walnut Street.
