Baseball has a special place in every child’s heart, but especially children in Troy.

The city of Troy has long been thought of as a “baseball town,” and every child in the area has the opportunity to play America’s favorite pastime.

The Troy Miracle League opened its third baseball season on Thursday afternoon at Miracle Field at the Troy Sportsplex.

Two teams of youngsters, one side sporting the colors of the Angels and the other decked out in Braves gear, took to the field on Opening Day.

“There is just something about baseball that is truly American,” said Dan Smith, director of Troy Parks and Recreation. “There is baseball in many countries around the world, but here kids grow up playing it in their backyards. It is a fun game that every child should have the opportunity to play.”

The rubberized safety-surface field opened in the summer of 2011, and is a field designed for children and adults with special needs to play baseball.

The season runs during the month’s of April and May.

“It is a great blessing for the children to experience the game of baseball,” said Smith. “The volunteers who come out also receive a great blessing. Baseball is a game for every one, and brings our the kid in us all.”
