Troy looks to rebound versus Jax State tonight

Troy’s baseball team was riding high after a three-game sweep of Middle Tennessee State at home. The Trojans struggled this past weekend however as their seven-game win streak was snapped as the team lost two-of-three games on the road to Louisiana-Lafayette.

After jumping out to 5-0 second inning lead over the Ragin’ Cajuns in Friday’s series opener, Troy watched as several key mistakes cost them down the stretch in a 7-6 loss.

A three-run home run by Brandon Brown put the Trojans on the board.

Trae Santos hit a pair of long balls including one to leadoff the third inning.

Troy (21-9, 7-5 Sun Belt) tied a season-high in the game with nine extra-base hits.

ULL used six consecutive hits in the sixth inning to pull within one, 5-4. The Cajuns would take the lead on a two-out single off of Troy reliever Nate Hill, who replaced starter Tanner Hicks on the mound.

Saturday’s matchup looked to be another nail-biter. With Troy trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, ULL’s Seth Harrison blasted a grand slam to open up the game for the Cajuns.

Troy starter Will Starling struggled at time but did retire seven straight batters including a ground out and a strikeout to open the fifth.

Troy got one back on Sunday with a 10-4 victory over ULL. The Trojans rode a complete game performance by Shane McCain to the win. The decision snapped Louisiana-Lafayette’s 11-game home win streak and moved Troy into a tie for third place in the Sun Belt Conference standing with South Alabama.

Tyler Vaughn and Logan Pierce opened the game with consecutive singles before back-to-back RBI hits from Danny Collins and Trae Santos gave Troy the early lead.

Josh McDorman finished the game 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Collins hit his seventh home run of the season in the eighth.

The Trojans play host to Jacksonville State tonight in a game set for a 6 p.m. start. Troy defeated the Gamecocks, 13-5, on the road on March 19.

Ryan Sorce (3-0, 2.95) is expected to get the start for Troy on the mound.
