The Pike County community has lost one of its most dedicated historians.

John M. Hutcheson died early Tuesday morning in Montgomery after a short illness.

Hutcheson was the president of the Pike County Historical Society and also served as the society’s program coordinator.

“John was one of the nicest men that I have ever known. He was a true Southern gentleman,” said Karen Bullard, historical society member and local historian. “John had a love and appreciation for history, especially for Pike County history. Being president of the Pike County Historical Society suited him to a tee.”

Bullard said Hutcheson’s term as president would have expired in January and he had told the society that he would remain active but would not assumed a leadership role.

“John had recently moved to Montgomery to be closer to his sons,” Bullard said. “All of us who knew John are deeply saddened by his death. He was a wonderful man and we all adored him. He will be greatly missed.”

Hutcheson will be remembered as a loyal and thoughtful friend.

He had a deep passion for history, stamps, and coins. He was also an extremely active citizen involved with many civic activities. Organizations John was involved with are too many to list here, however, here are a few: Stamp and Coin Clubs, the Olmsted Historical Society, Pioneer Museum of Alabama, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Military Order of the Stars and Bars.
