Industrial accident results in fatality

An industrial accident killed one man and left another critically injured on Monday.

The accident occurred about 11:45 a.m. at KW Plastics, Recycling Division, in Troy, where police responded to a call of a pedestrian being struck at the facility.

Rodney Williams, 35, of Troy, a veteran employee at KW, was killed in the incident. Elmer Fleming 59, of Brundidge, was critically injured and was transported first to Troy Regional Medical Center then airlifted to a Montgomery hospital, officials said. He was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

The only other employee involved in the accident was a truck driver, who was not identified by company officials or police. “Our investigation is ongoing,” said Sgt. Benny Scarbrough, spokesman for the Troy Police Department. “We don’t comment on ongoing investigations.” In addition to the police, the incident is being investigated by OSHA and KW officials.

According to a statement released by the company, the accident “claimed the life of an employee … A second employee was seriously injured. No further comment is available pending the outcome of the final investigation. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of our two employees during this tragic time.”

Sources said this is the first fatality reported at the recycling plant. KW Plastics, Recycling Division produces custom, premium post consumer resins and employees approximately 170 people.
