The Charles Henderson Trojans took to the field Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium as part of the spring jamboree to show what progress has been made through spring practice, so far.

In the Trojans first game against the Wolverines of Carver, the Trojans were able to drive the ball down the field in two of their four drives, however, where unable to get any points, as Carver defeated CHHS 12-0.

“Obviously, we made a lot of mistakes but we were playing a high caliber opponent,” head coach Hugh Fountain said after the Trojans game against Carver.

“We were able to move the ball down the field, but when you do that, you got to score some points.

“Overall, I thought we played well. I saw a lot of good hustle and I thought the kids played hard – but we got to get better,” the coach added.

Under center for the Trojans, was rising senior Corey Dennis, who was a quarterback and wide receiver last year for the Trojans.

The dual-threat Dennis, rushed for 56 yards while completing six of his nine passes for 53 yards.

The Trojan offense as a whole had just 137 yards.

“(Corey) did well,” Fountain said. “No complaints.”

“He did what we wanted him to do. He ran the ball well and threw the ball well.

“He saw a lot of time at the (quarterback position) last year and we expect him to be a leader for us this season,” he said.

On the first two possessions, CHHS only gained five yards on six plays.

The next two saw the Trojans drive 71 and 61 yards respectively, yet both drive ended on fourth downs inside the Carver red-zone.

The Wolverines were able to attack the Trojan defense quickly in the game, as Carver was able to set up two rushing touchdowns through the passing game.

Carver finished with 152 yards, 83 of which came through the air.

“We got two returning veterans and two kids who have never played a down (in the secondary). I thought they played well but we got to get better back there,” Fountain said.

In the second game against Lanier, the Trojans again struggled to find the end zone, as CHHS lost 12-0.

“It’s spring practice,” Fountain said. “We have only had eight days of work –it’s still really early.

“I don’t think we played as well as we did in game one. The effort and the hustle was just not there, but again, it’s only May. We have a lot of time to get better.”

The next time the Trojans will be on the field will be on Aug. 20 at Pike County High School.
