Troy groups rally to serve

Troy University has plenty to choose from when it comes to campus involvement.

From Greek fraternities and sororities to sports clubs to campus ministries, Troy University students can find a niche in one of the many groups.

But, despite the vast differences in many of these campus clubs, there is something that brought many of them together Saturday — service.

Students from the Troy University Wesley Foundation, the Baptist Campus Ministry, the Christian Student Center and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity joined forces Saturday for a community-wide day of service, said Wesley Foundation President Ashley Davis.

“We built a wheelchair ramp, did drywall for a family, worked on the local Habitat house, delivered Meals on Wheels,” Davis said.

The groups didn’t stop there either.

“We had one group bagging groceries at Southern Family Market, some went to a few houses and cleaned gutters and trimmed shrubbery,” said Brad Bensinger, leader of the BCM. “Some folks went out to the elementary school and helped do chores out there.”

Davis said the idea for the groups to collaborate came from Bensinger, who originally rallied the groups together.

“Individually we’ve done our own projects, but this is the first time we’ve done a group effort,” Davis said. “I think Brad from the BCM called me a few weeks ago and just wanted students on Troy’s campus to be more in touch with their community.” Davis said she has been involved with the Wesley Foundation for eight years, but she has never experienced something like this. “This is one of the first times I’ve ever worked with some of the guys at the fraternities and other campus ministries,” Davis said. “Service is a way to really come together and put aside our differences.” Bensinger said the experience was worthwhile for both the community and those who served.

“The students got a blessing out of it,” Bensinger said. “In all that we did, our effort was to glorify God and serve our neighbor like he did for us.”
