MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Montgomery lawyer James Anderson has won the Democratic Party’s nomination for attorney general, a post Republicans have won in the last four elections.

Anderson defeated former Democratic Party executive director Giles Perkins in the party’s runoff Tuesday. With 87 percent of the votes tallied, Anderson had 59 percent to 41 percent for Perkins.

Anderson is is a prominent Montgomery attorney who has represented the party on legal issues.

The winner will face the GOP nominee, Birmingham attorney Luther Strange, in the Nov. 2 general election. Strange defeated incumbent Troy King in the June 1 Republican primary.
